    Ten Trends impacting on education in 2017! Join Derek Wenmoth, Director of eLearning at CORE Education, on Facebook Live at 12.30pm this Friday, 7th July, as Derek discusses the release of CORE's Ten Trends and provides valuable insights into what is driving the greater emphasis on a digital technologies curriculum in schools.     How might you begin to explore these as a staff?  With your students?  With your whānau?

Sometimes hearing stories about humanoid robots helping us check in at the airport and now the first 'digital human' Sophie (Air New Zealand's latest employee interacting with travellers) might seem like a world away from school, but your example shows us these trends are permeating our learning environments.

    Yesterday's CORE's live stream from Facebook was another short reminder of how as educators, we need to be actively pursuing what the Ten Trends drivers are and deepen our understandings about how they can/will influence education for good/bad or other.

    For example, automation has progressed from replacing the dirty/dangerous jobs to the repetitive/routine tasks. What dirty, dangerous, repetitive or routine tasks would you like to see replaced by technology? What do you think your students would say?

    Derek and Suzi also touched on the rise of recognising the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) and how the authentic integration of these areas, much like the Makerspace movement can provide rich opportunities for students to develop transferrable skills, that will enable them to flourish in a world full of digital robotics and artificial intelligence. 

    If your school is trialing or implementing STEM or Makerspaces as a form of authentic integration, we'd love to hear more.

          There's a tendency for us to think that the real advances in Intelligent Tutoring (AI enhanced adaptive teaching and learning systems) come from far away places like America, China, and Japan. So I just wanted to draw readers' attention to our very own died-in-the-wool Kiwi programme at Canterbury University: The Intelligent Computer Tutoring Group headed by Tanja Mitrovic. Young people considering a career in teaching maybe picture themselves in a classroom or other innovative learning space working in physical proximity with their students, but the real innovations are more likely to unfold in cyberspace - journeys of the mind.

              It was great to view the quick intro into cultural and artificial Intelligence aspect of the Ten Trends 2017 in today’s live Facebook feed from the CORE's Facebook page.

              Derek mentioned entertainment media like iRobot and Person of Interest. Other TV programmes like the Blacklist remind us of the deep dark web, and who can forget the movie Minority Report - about predictions of premeditated acts of crime? Sound like science fiction? This is all becoming reality – from robots to the connection of networked computers and the prediction that the ‘singularity’ of computers means that in 2045, computers (and AI) may not just sort data, but identify relationships between data and start to ‘think’ like humans.

              As the documentary above shares,

              AI uses information collected in the past and mathematically calculates probabilities about the future. Human beings can't grasp the computations involved, we can understand of the answers but as humans we just can't deal with all that information, so new technology like Watson artificial intelligence will help us work in those domains. By 2050 I don't think we'll be able to survive without it.

              So much information, we can't possibly process/calculate it all. Hence the (sometimes rapid) development of Artificial Intellienge.

              In this chat, Derek touches on the short-term and long-term implications of Artificial Intelligence on education and invites us to think about how these developments (both good and ‘bad’) can help influence our students - as well as create personalised opportunities to support learner agency.

                        Kia ora koutou ktoa!

                        Just reread the article in Jostle where Linda Oj posted Chrissie Butlers blogpost called Inclusion - 'with ' not 'for'
                        I also then listened to the 10-Trends interview with Anaru White and Derek Wenmoth.

                        It raised a question for me around... 'how can we continue to bring inclusion to the for and what might we do to continue to make it too, a trend that is growing in our society?' 

                        The shift of emphasis towards the needs of the learner make inclusion a real focus. With inclusion mentioned only x2 in the 10 Trends document, shall we ask ourselves, like we are in Māori medium (partnership) sense at the ground up of this document, how we might build the conversation more substantively from an inclusion base in 2018.  If so, how can we all help to bring this about???

                          At CORE on the LX (learning experience) team, we have been focusing on the way our participants access our professional learning courses. The Moodle platform is the same as that implemented by many schools, so we think there may be a community of interest here. I'm referring to the Ten Trend "Data Science" and brooding on ways in which we will move toward more data-informed learning design as we seek to offer professional learning personalised to individuals and specific groups. We're imagining something like the recommender systems that work so well on platforms like Amazon. Am I striking a chord? Is there anyone who would like to share in a conversation along these lines?
