    Authoring a school derived self review tool to progress Culturally Responsive Practice

    Lepperton School is a contributing school from years 1-6 in Taranaki. In between New Plymouth and Inglewood, Lepperton is currently in a new build phase. This, according to the new principal Andrew Retallick, was a prime time for the school to reconnect with the local iwi, hapu and community.

     

    One of the first steps was to understand and research further into the local history of the school. The land the school sits on and the burgeoning historical landmarks are what the staff and Board of Trustess are keen to delve deeper into, to strengthen their Culturally Responsive Practice.

     

    On Saturday March 3rd, teachers and BOT members met for the day to start their journey on strengthening ties with local tangata whenua while aligning their knowledge building with some key Ministry documents;

    • Te Tiriti o Waitangi

    • Ka Hikitia

    • Te Kotahitanga

    • Tātaiako

     

    After a day of unpacking and making sense of Tātaiako, a draft Culturally Responsive self review tool was authored. Aligning with the five cultural competences in Tātaiako, the schools crafting of the Tangata Whenuatanga competency,  is shared below. (A mere ‘snippet’ of the full self review tool)

    Demonstrate commitment to tangata whenuatanga and bicultural partnership and practice in Aotearoa New Zealand

     

    Elaboration of the standard:

    1.1 Understand and recognise the unique status of tangata whenua in Aotearoa New Zealand.

    1.2 Understand and acknowledge the histories, heritages, languages and cultures of partners to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

    1.3 Practise and develop the use of te reo and tikanga Māori.
